The history of Cosimo Maria Masini
The company Cosimo Maria Masini is nestled on the hills of San Miniato, an ancient medieval village in the heart of Tuscany, in the province of Pisa, along the route of the Via Francigena, land of Wines and White Truffle (the precious tuber magnatum). The estate, owned by the Masini family since 2000, extends over a single hill, 40 hectares of vineyards, olive groves and arable land. Villa la Selva, the heart of the estate, is an ancient residence that belonged to the Buonaparte family, then purchased in the mid-nineteenth century by the Marquis Cosimo Ridolfi, the founder of the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Pisa, who started apply innovative techniques to vineyards and built the vinification cellar currently in use.
The production
In this area viticulture has ancient origins, boasts over two thousand years of history. Our vineyards, located about 100 meters above sea level, extend for about 13 hectares on clayey soil, of Pliocene origin, rich in fossils with microclimatic conditions ideal for the vine. The varieties grown are those of the Tuscan viticultural tradition: Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Trebbiano, Malvasia bianca and Nera, Buonamico, San Colombano and an almost disappeared native, the Sanforte, whose genetic heritage we are recovering from. There are also international vineyards: Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.
