The history of Pieve De' Pitti

198 hectares owned by woods, cultivated fields and above all vineyards and olive groves, which extend radially on the hill dominated by the Villa and the Castle of Pava.

Pieve de Pitti owes its name to the Florentine Pitti family, owners of the farm until the mid-seventeenth century and to the parish church of San Giovanni, built on the ruins of an ancient Etruscan church still consecrated today.

Once the Castle of Pava was a small fortress guarding the road and the ford over the Era and had a small village surrounded by solid fortifications. The small builiding consisting of the Villa with chapel dates back to the 12th century and belonged to the bishops of Volterra. After many historical events and changes of ownership, at the end of the 60s it came to our family

Production

For the palate and for tradition we have made the rough taste of Sangiovese our own and we have oriented all our viticulture to respect the old vineyards planted according to the Chianti rule at the beginning of the 70s, on the hills around the Villa.

Our soils, sands, clays are rich in shells and fossils and the sea breezes make the character of our wines original, with a savory and intense taste. In addition to Sangiovese we also grow Vermentino, Trebbiano and Syrah.

Curiosities

A few years ago, on the occasion of excavation work in the vicinity of the Villa, the bulldozers found human bones and the remains of terracotta pots. The castle cemetery probably once stood on this spot.

Nearby places to visit

Terricciola: ancient village of Etruscan origin, as documented by the discovery of settlements in the hamlets of Morrona and Soiana, where there are necropolis of the Hellenistic age with underground chamber tombs. Of particular interest is the hypogeum of the Belvedere.

Terme di Casciana: ancient spa in a beautifully isolated area in the Pisa countryside, where you can spend a few hours of relaxation and well-being in the thermal pools.
