The history of Podere La Chiesa
Podere La Chiesa is a winery located among the Pisan hills, 30km south-east of Pisa along the road to Volterra. It is on the top of an upland (125 meters a.s.l.) just before the little village of Casanova. The location of the winery is ideal and unique: not only it is exposed to all the four cardinal points, but is also touched by the gentle winds from the Thyrrenian Sea which guarantees some relief from the warm summers enriching and preparing the vineyards for the harvest.
Thanks to the great passion and skills of Maurizio Iannantuono and Palma Tonacci, Podere La Chiesa produces high quality wines organic and mostly from Sangiovese grape that is the most important autochthonous character of the territory. The new winery is a masterpiece of modern architecture, built in harmony with the beautiful valley of Casanova, a natural amphitheater entirely dedicated to the cultivation of grapes. Visitors, who love wine and wine tastings, are welcome in a warm and cozy setting, immersed in the wonderful Tuscan countryside. The cellar hosts art presentations as well as cultural and musical events on a yearly basis.
"Our wine is the outcome of our hard team work, deep knowledge of Tuscan nature, local culture and passion. Our Wine is an emotion that our guests treasure forever in their heart after every visit."
Palma and Maurizio
In the nineties, Palma and Maurizio began to mature the idea of creating a wine-making company and producing their own wine. There were years of countless visits to wineries, the passion grew from visit to visit, meetings with some producers are considered by Palma and Maurizio decisive episodes for the birth of Podere La Chiesa. In the new millennium, they convinced themselves to definitively leave their occupations in the computer world and devote themselves 100% to viticulture and wine. They discovered in the Pisan hills, in Terricciola, loc. Casanova, the best pedoclimatic conditions to let their dream come true. The Pisan hills extend from Pontedera to Volterra, in a soft landscape of wavy lines, still intact in its morphology. To the east, towards the coast, border the Livorno hills and to the west the Florentine hills. They were Etruscan lands, as evidenced by the numerous archaeological finds found especially in the Volterra area; during the Etruscan era the vine was already present and exploited in the territory. Terricciola's soil is a more than 1 million years old seabed, rich in limestone sediments, peat, sand and clay layers. Together with a mild climate thanks to the proximity to the sea, they are aspects that confer uniqueness to the terroir of our area.

Curiosities
- The facades facing down towards the valley feature large circular holes that are reminiscent of bunches of grapes and from the inside, these windows perfectly frame the surrounding landscape, turning it into a key element of the project.
- Throughout the year, the winery hosts art exhibitions as well as cultural and musical events.
Nearby places to visit
- Casanova: a village whose earliest records date back to the 12th century, when it was a stronghold that housed a monastery and warred with the other Valdera castles.
- Terricciola: An ancient village of Etruscan origin, as proven by the discovery of settlements in the hamlets of Morrona and Soiana, where there are necropolises dating back to the Hellenistic period with underground chamber tombs. The Belvedere Hypogeum is of particular interest.
