Experience description

Casa di Monte is a company covering 80 hectares that has been owned by the Simoncini family for five generations. In recent years, the company has been focusing on native vines as well as on the technological renewal of the winemaking and aging cellars, reaching an even higher quality in terms of wine, and an additional expertise in the production of olive oil.

Let the staff of Casa di Monte guide your visit to the two facilities and to the wine production areas. Then, taste 3 wines of your choice accompanied by bruschetta and 2 olive oils. The tasting session will take place either outdoor or in the tasting tower, offering a 360° panoramic view of the Montespertoli hills.

Curiosities

  • In 1872, Angelo Oreste Simoncini started to work as a farmer and, at the end of the 1800s, as a producer of straw for hats. Helped by about sixty seasonal workers, he used the straw to produce the Leghorn hat, well known all over the world.

Nearby places to visit

  • Montespertoli: In an area that preserves traces of the Etruscan and Roman presence, the first reliable records of the first urban agglomerations of Montespertoli date back to the 11th century. Over the centuries, the vicissitudes of the territory remained linked to the various Florentine noble families that had agricultural properties in it: the Machiavellis, the Acciaioli, the Guicciardini and the Frescobaldi.
  • Chianti Wine Market Show: every year, from the last Saturday of May to the first Sunday of June, the "Chianti Wine Market Show" is held, organized by the municipal administration with the aim of promoting the main product of local agriculture, the wine. At the end of each week dedicated to the wine festival, there is the fireworks display, in which fireworks are set off.
  • Sagra della Ficattola: in the month of July the ficattola festival is held in the locality of Fornacette, a local specialty made with a mixture of fried bread stuffed with salami from the area.
  • Castello di Poppiano: it was built around the year 1000 and is mentioned at least since 1199, when it already belonged to the Guicciardinis, still owners.
  • Montegufoni Castle: Montegufoni stands on the old Via Volterrana, the road that connects Florence with Volterra, a communication artery which, following the final submission of Volterra by Florence (1472), assumed strategic importance for trade in mineral resources and salt. Originally the castle belonged to the Ormanni family, a family mentioned by Dante Alighieri in the Divinia Commedia. Today the castle, like many places in Tuscany, has been transformed into a luxurious vacation spot: divided into apartments, it is used above all for ceremonies and conferences.
  • Castle of Sidney Sonnino: it belonged to the famous Italian politician of the nineteenth century. Of the most ancient nucleus remains the thirteenth-century tower, placed on a hill overlooking the surrounding valley; to it is attached a seventeenth-century palace and other buildings.
